Is Your Pokémon Card Worth Grading? A Quick Checklist

Should You Grade It?

Grading can protect a card and boost its value, but it costs money and takes time. Before you submit, run through this checklist.

1. Check the Centering

Look at the borders on the front. Even borders on all sides are a good sign. Heavily off-center cards rarely earn top grades.

2. Inspect the Corners and Edges

Sharp corners and clean edges matter. Whitening, nicks, or bends will lower the grade. A magnifier or loupe helps.

3. Examine the Surface

Tilt the card under a bright light. Scratches, print lines, dents, and scuffs show up clearly this way, especially on holo cards.

4. Do the Math

Compare the grading fee to the difference between a raw card and a graded copy. If the gap is small, grading may not be worth it.

Our Advice

Grade cards that are valuable, in great condition, or personally meaningful to you. For everything else, good sleeves and a binder are a smart, low-cost way to protect them.
